Where freeride was born

The Powder Capital of the Alps.

St. Anton am Arlberg receives more than 8 metres of snow in a good season. The terrain above the village drops through north-facing couloirs, open bowls and tree runs that have been skied by the world’s best for over 100 years. This is not a destination that markets itself as a powder resort. It simply is one.

4 Reasons Powder Skiers Choose the Arlberg

The terrain is real. The snow is deep. The culture is old.

8 Metres of Snow Per Season

The Arlberg sits at the junction of Atlantic and Continental weather systems. When storms come in from the west, they dump on St. Anton. More than 8 metres per season on average. The north-facing terrain holds powder for days after a storm.

Terrain for Every Level of Freeride

From wide open bowls above the Valluga to steep north-facing couloirs, tree runs through the Rendl forest and the backcountry accessed from Lech and Zurs. 300 km of linked terrain means you never ski the same powder line twice.

Over 100 Years of Ski Culture

Hannes Schneider invented modern alpine skiing technique here. The Arlberg ski culture runs deep. Local guides know every line, every powder stash and exactly where to go after a storm. This knowledge does not exist anywhere else.

The Best Après-Ski in the Alps

Skiing deep powder all day and ending at the Mooserwirt or Krazy Kanguruh is an Arlberg institution. The après-ski in St. Anton has its own reputation. After a powder day, it earns it.

Powder Skiing at the Arlberg

North-Facing Terrain. Cold Snow. No Crowds After the Storm.

The Arlberg gets heavy snowfall from Atlantic weather systems moving in from the west. When it snows, it snows properly. The north-facing terrain above St. Anton holds cold powder for two to three days after a storm. Experienced powder skiers know this. They also know to book a guide.

A Powder Skiing Week at the Arlberg

Storm Day

The Morning After

North-facing bowls above the Valluga. Cold, untracked powder. This is the day you have been waiting for. A local guide takes you to lines that most people on the mountain never find.

Rest and Recovery

After two deep snow days the sauna earns its place. Private sauna access at Die Arlbergerin. A long breakfast, a slow start and back on the mountain by noon for the afternoon softening.

Questions About Powder Skiing at the Arlberg

Everything you need to know before you book.
How much snow does St. Anton get per season?

St. Anton am Arlberg receives an average of more than 8 metres of snowfall per season. The resort sits at the crossroads of Atlantic and Continental weather systems, making it one of the snowiest ski destinations in the Alps.

Where is the best off-piste terrain in St. Anton?

The north-facing terrain above the Valluga is the most famous powder skiing area. The Rendl sector offers tree runs and open faces. The backcountry connections to Lech and Zurs open up a huge amount of freeride terrain. A local guide is strongly recommended for all off-piste skiing.

Do I need a guide for powder skiing at the Arlberg?

For on-piste skiing in powder conditions, no. For off-piste terrain, couloirs and backcountry routes, yes. The Arlberg has crevasses, avalanche terrain and unmarked hazards. Local guides know exactly where to go and, more importantly, where not to go.

When is the best time for powder skiing at the Arlberg?

December through February sees the most frequent storms. January is statistically the snowiest month. However, the Arlberg can receive heavy snowfall at any point from November to April. Checking the forecast and being flexible is the key to timing a powder trip.

How long does the powder last after a storm?

On north-facing terrain above 2000m, cold powder at the Arlberg can last two to three days after a storm before it settles or gets tracked out. South-facing slopes transform much faster. Local knowledge makes a significant difference.

Is Die Arlbergerin suitable for freeride skiers?

Yes. Die Arlbergerin is 700m from the main lift and directly on the ski bus route. The private sauna is particularly popular with skiers after a hard day in deep snow. The breakfast buffet gives you everything you need before an early start.

Can beginners also enjoy skiing in St. Anton?

Yes. The Arlberg has extensive beginner areas and excellent ski schools. Powder conditions and off-piste terrain are for experienced skiers, but the piste skiing in St. Anton is world-class at every level.

When should I book a powder skiing holiday in St. Anton?

As early as possible. Powder skiers who plan around storm forecasts often book flexible stays or book early and adjust their travel dates. The best rooms at both properties go quickly in peak winter weeks.
